Children are abused, neglected and even killed in order to protect their wider community from harm, as a consequence of the fear of "spirit children." This fear became a reality for Narcisuss' mother. She explains how after he developed cerebral palsy as a baby, their community relied on age-old supersitions to explain his condition. "At times they shy away from you, they don’t even want to get close to you."
