Sir Paul and Lady Jill Ruddock are among AfriKids’ founding Ambassadors and through their family foundation have played a huge role in changing young lives with AfriKids. Dedicated partners for more than a decade, The Ruddock Foundation has helped get children off the streets and into school, established an award-winning primary hospital and helped abolished the “Spirit Child Phenomenon” – educating and supporting communities to abandon a harmful traditional practice.
Mama Laadi is one of AfriKids’ local heroes who is particularly close to Sir Paul and Lady Jill’s hearts. This remarkable lady was a community health nurse who once fed and cared for children on the streets out of a single room. Today, thanks to the Ruddock family and AfriKids, she runs a happy, healthy foster home for children without a safe home. Mama Laadi handles some of the most challenging and distressing of AfriKids’ cases, but her restorative home has transformed the lives of hundreds of children and supported them not only to secure their own futures, but to give back to their communities as they grow older.
“In Ghana I saw AfriKids’ local team in action, they are a force to be reckoned with! Passionate and tenacious, the impact they are having is remarkable and they won’t stop until every child has the rights they deserve. They have our fullest support.”
– Sir Paul Ruddock

The Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office (FCDO) leads the UK government’s work to end extreme poverty. FCDO aims to tackle the global challenges of our time including poverty and disease, mass migration, insecurity and conflict. FCDO’s work aims to build a safer, healthier, more prosperous world for people in developing countries and in the UK too.
Support from FCDO has been critical to some of AfriKids’ largest and most complex projects. This support from the British people has helped thousands of children go to school and helped bridge the gap between Ghana’s policy for universal education and the reality faced by families living in poverty. More recently, support from FCDO has enabled us to tackle child marriage and harmful practices that are putting children – particularly girls, children without safe homes and children living with disabilities – at risk. This work is changing attitudes, practices and helping local people lead the changes needed to achieve a future where the rights of every child are valued, protected and met by all.
